Winter storms can hurt the Northeast IN area in unexpected ways – and cause serious damage to your home. Paul Davis of Northeast Indiana has some advice for you to help protect your property from storm damage – we want you to be safe and sound this winter!
- Check outside your home for loose shingles, siding, and fence boards and repair all issues as soon as you can. These items can easily blow off during storms.
- Inspect the trees around your home and have damaged or weak parts removed, especially those close to the roof. To make sure large limbs and branches are handled safely, work with a tree care professional.
- Make sure gutters and downspouts are free of debris so your drainage system can perform its function. Downspouts should direct water at least 5’ away from your home’s foundation. An emergency fix can be as simple as adding downspout extensions to those areas where the water is not carried far enough away. Neglecting these problems can lead to flooding, mold, and termites
- Be sure you have flashlights, camping lanterns, and/or headlamps easily accessible if a power outage occurs. That means fresh batteries for everything, too.
- Purchase a supply of water and ready-to-eat food on hand as well. Having this in advance of a coming storm will help you avoid sold-out grocery aisles and long lines when disaster is imminent.
All of us at Paul Davis of Northeast Indiana encourage you, your family, and your home to be storm-ready at all times. Follow these steps to protect your family and sleep easier this winter.
